For those living in or visiting the city of Perth, there are many options available for public transport. Perth boasts a network of reasonably priced trains, ferries and buses. The fare system is based upon zones and travel time: e.g. a trip from one of Perth’s suburbs into the city costs about $5.00. Travel is free by train and bus if you are riding within Perth’s business district. The city centre features its own free transport mode, the CAT (Central Area Transit).
Perth’s public transportation runs until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Travelers can purchase tickets in the main train stations and bus terminals, or upon boarding.
Perth is a relatively young city with good driving conditions. Motorists drive on the left side of the road, and with a balmy climate, weather seldom affects drivers. Most streets are in a grid pattern, and there are two main highways serving Perth and its surrounding areas—the Mitchell Freeway, running North, and the Southbound Kwinana Freeway. Speed limits range from 50-110kph. Perth is car-oriented, with most families owning two or more.
Visitors may drive in Australia for up to 12 months, provided they have a valid driver’s license issued by their country of origin. Those who plan to reside in Perth permanently have three months to transfer their driver’s license at the DPI (Department for Planning and Infrastructure). No testing is necessary, out of country drivers are simply asked to show their current license.
